Hemp in Food
We analyze the controversy over the classification of hemp as a "novel food" and its impact on the food industry.
The Novel Food Debate
The classification of CBD and other hemp extracts as "Novel Food" by the European Commission has generated significant uncertainty in the market. This classification requires products to go through a rigorous authorization process before they can be marketed.
Current status
There are currently no CBD extracts authorized as Novel Food in the EU, although several companies have submitted applications for authorization.
what is allowed?
Hemp seeds
Hemp seeds and their derivatives (seed oil, protein) are NOT Novel Food and can be traded freely.
Hemp leaves for infusions
Hemp leaves for infusions have a documented history of consumption and can be marketed.
Our Position
AECANI advocates that hemp extracts with CBD have a history of significant consumption in Europe prior to 1997, the date established by the Novel Food Regulation. There is evidence of traditional use that should be considered.
We work for:
- Documenting the history of traditional hemp consumption
- Support Novel Food authorization requests
- Promote a reasonable interpretation of the regulations
- Defend the interests of the sector before the authorities
Nutritional benefits of hemp
- Rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids
- High vegetable protein content
- Source of vitamin E and minerals
- High quality dietary fiber
